Now there is USB Wi-Fi adapter, Wi-Fire from hField Technologies, that helps you connect to low strength Wi-Fi signals.  In your own home, traveling in a hotel or on the road, you now have an external directional antenna that can be connected to your computer via the USB port.  Extra receiving sensitivity along with a directional antenna alows Wi-Fire to use Wi-Fi signals up to 1,000 fee away.
