Cellular Yagi Antenna; Is it better?

05.28.07

What is the deal with cellular yagi antennas.  Are they better than regular antennas and how do they perform?  First of all what is a yagi antenna?  A yagi antenna is a directional antenna.  It must be pointed in the direction that you wish to send/receive a cellular signal.  You probably have seen them before but didn’t know what they were.

800MHz Yagi Antenna  1900MHz Yagi

Above is a picture of a Wilson 301129 Cellular Yagi antenna and a Wilson 301124 Cellular Yagi Antenna.  Both are cellular antennas, so why are they so different.  The Wilson 301129 (shorter, fatter) is tunned for 800-900 MHz and the Wilson 301124 (longer, thinner) is tunned for 1800-1990MHz.  Tuned is what makes yagi antennas perform better than convention omni-directional antennas.  Yagi antennas are tuned for specific frequencies, where omni-directional antennas are usually multi-band.  Wilson Electronics yagi antennas have about double the gain over their dual-band omni-directional antennas.

So why doesn’t everyone use a yagi?  Good question.  Remember yagi antennas are directional and have to be pointed in the direction they are going to send/receive a cellular signal, for example a cell tower.  This means that the antenna will need to be stationary.  Yagi antennas are good for buildings or other permanent structures, but they don’t work for anything that is mobile such as a vehicle that is changing directions and moving around.

Omni-direction multi-band cellular antennas are used when mobility is needed or multiple frequencies are needed.  Antenna gain (strength) is traded for mobility and multi-frequency.  So when you are working with a specific frequency in a stationary location, go with a yagi antenna for maximum gain, but remember, you need to know where to point it.

Cellular amplifier and antenna kit designed for vehicle fleets

05.23.07

Fleet vehicles have specific needs when it comes to installed equipment.  Fleet vehicles for utility companies, law enforcement, etc. need to have equipment permanently installed usually by professional installers.  Powerful Signal has configured a 3-watt cellular amplifier and cellular antenna kit just for fleet vehicles.  Cellular communications with customers and the office are critical for businesses and emergency agencies.  Cellular amplifiers and antennas improve cell signal strength creating better cellular coverage and providing faster data throughput for on-board cellular workstations and modems.  The PowerfulSignal Wireless Fleet Kit includes the following:

  • Wilson 801201 dual band 40dB cellular amplifier
  • Wilson 301104 NMO 12″ cellular antenna
  • Wilson 3/4″ or 3/8″ mount for the cellular antenna
  • Wilson hardwire kit

The NMO (non-magnetic option) cellular antenna along with either the 3/4″ or 3/8″ mount is permanently installed on the roof of the vehicle.  The Wilson 801201 dual band cellular amplifier can be wired into the vehicle ignition system with the hardwire kit.  Sometimes magnet mount antennas and cigarette lighter power supplies are a bit too portable.

What is a Dock-N-Talk?

05.11.07

What is a Dock-N-Talk?  First, the device is made by Phonelabs and has won several awards.  People that use it really like it and it works very well.  So now that the introductions are over, what does this device do?

The main purpose of Dock-N-Talk is to join the functionality of your cell phone and cordless or wired phone.  Let me explain how the Dock-N-Talk is connected to your cordless phone and then we will explore the many uses that it has in your home, RV, boat, etc.

 Dock-N-Talk connected to cordless phone

The Dock-N-Talk can connect to both cordless and regular phones, but for simplicity I am just going to use the term cordless in this post.  Let’s say that you have one land line comming into your house and you have a 2 line phone.  Using a regular phone wire, you can connect the Dock-N-Talk into the line 2 port on the phone.  The user’s manual tells you how to set a switch on the back of the unit.  Trust me, if I can do it, then anyone can do it.  Now the Dock-N-Talk is connected to your cordless phone.

We now need to connect the Dock-N-Talk to your cell phone.  Powerful Signal sells the Dock-N-Talk with the bluetooth module so I will focus on this connection method.  The cell phone needs to be paired to the bluetooth module on the Dock-N-Talk.  This was something that was new to me, but very easy to do.  You need to find the bluetooth menu option on your phone and select the “Add new Device” option.  The phone will indicate that it is searching for a new device.  At this time you press a button on the Dock-N-Talk and very shortly after the cell phone and Dock-N-Talk are communicating.  Lights on the Dock-N-Talk let you know what is going on.  Id did this with three different cell phones and it worked each time with no problems.

Now that the cell phone and the Dock-N-Talk are connected, the fun starts.  Let’s say someone calls your cell phone.  Line 2 of your cordless phone rings and you can answer your cell phone on any handset in your house.  Let’s say that your sitting in your kitchen and it is Saturday and you want to make a long distance call on your free minutes (like there realy free) using your cell phone.  Just pickup you cordless phone, select line 2 and dial out like any other call.  The call goes out through your cell phone.

So why is this so great.  For starters, your cell phone, using bluetooth, can automatically connect to your cordless phone when you walk into the area covered by bluetooth.  From a business perspective, you can now use all the features of your office phone such as speaker phone, speed dials, etc.  Communiations are consolidated on your desk phone.

Individuals that don’t want to have a land line can now have all the nice features of a cordless phone in their home, but use a cell phone for their calling.  When you come home, put your phone down and charge it and use any cordless handset in the house to receive and make calls while your cell phone is charging.

The Dock-N-Talk is great for RV’s and houseboats.  Now you can have a real on-board phone system just like your house.  Grandma and grandpa can both be talking with the grand kids at the same time.  You can have multiple handsets scattered around the RV or boat just like back at the house.

So now you have a bit of an idea what Dock-N-Talk is and how it works.  This brings us to the next issue of keeping a strong cell signal for our cell phone so that we can use a Dock-N-Talk in the RV, cabin or boat.  In the future I will be talking about cellular amplifiers and how to use them with a Dock-N-Talk.  Visit www.PowerfulSignal.com for some ideas in this area.
