Wilson Electronics has just released their first amplifier specifically designed for in-line building use. The Wilson 806215 In-Line Signal Booster is designed to be used in conjunction with other building amplifiers in areas that require extra amplification due to splitters, taps, or extended coax cable runs.

For example, when coax has to be run 200 feet to reach another section of a building, the loss per foot can exceed 8dB. The 17dB Wilson 806215 can be inserted at the end to add 17dB back into the system so you can maintain adequate signal broadcasts from your antennas.

The Wilson 806215 In-Line Booster is dual-band so it handles both 800MHz and 1900MHz carriers using GSM and CDMA technology. Each frequency is independently adjustable for system balancing. Indicator lights are provided to indicate any error conditions.

The Wilson 806215 can be purchased at the following locations:

Mobile cell phone boosters come in a variety of prices and types. There are two basic types; connected and wireless. Connected cell phone booster have been around for about 10 years. The amplifier needs to be connected to the cell phone. Some direct-connect boosters are literally plugged into the cell phone with a specific adapter. Now days, these are not very common because most cell phones do not have ports to plug antennas and boosters into. A new type of connected booster has evolved that can be used on any type of cell phone. A passive antenna connected to the booster is placed on the back of the cell phone thus eliminating cellphone-specific adapters and the requirement for ports on the cell phone. Some boosters are built into cell phone cradles allowing the cell phone to be place in the cradle next to the antenna. An example of a cell phone booster built into a cradle is the Wilson 815226 Sleek. Another example of a direct connect mobile cell phone booster is the Wilson 811210 Signalboost. This amplifier has an antenna that goes on the back of the cell phone. The antenna is connected to the amplifier with about 8 feet of RG174 coax. In general, direct connect mobile cell phone boosters are less expensive than wireless systems.

Wireless mobile cell phone boosters have been around for about 7 years. These systems do not require any connection to the cell phone. This allows multiple cellular devices such as a cell phone, aircard, or tablet to use the amplifier simultaneously. Wireless cell phone boosters are more expensive because they need to have enough power to broadcast a signal inside the vehicle. In the early days, direct connect cell phone boosters were superior to the wireless, but this is not true today. Unless cost is an issue, wireless is the way to go. A couple of good examples of wireless cell phone boosters is the Wilson 801212 Dual-Band Wireless and the Top Signal 55 dual-band Wireless. Both these wireless systems are top rated and can handle multiple cellular devices in low signal areas.

Top Signal is a bit different from the others in quality. This is an extremely well-built unit that has everything you would expect, a heavy metal case for RF isolation, industry standard N-Connectors, ON/OFF switch, etc. The one thing that stands out is the fact that in each TS112651 box is the QC test report from the manufacturer. Each amplifier goes through a set of tests before leaving the manufacture and the test report is placed into the box with the amplifier.

Comparing amplifiers is becoming more difficult these days because the different manufacturers don’t present the exact same information in the same way. The Top Signal TS112651 is a 65 dB amplifier. It tests out at 65dB or better and runs at 65dB. Other manufacturers may offer a 65dB amplifier, but it peaks at 65 but runs at a typical 60dB as the norm. Looking at the test sheet for one of the TS112651 repeaters I saw that the 800 Cellular Uplink was 65.43 dB gain, 800 Cellular Downlink was 65.49 dB gain, 1900 PCS Uplink was 65.22 dB gain, and 1900 PCS Downlink was 65.04 dB gain. In all there were over a dozen tests run for both 800 and 1900 frequencies and Uplink and Downlink. I was impressed at the level of detail and the fact that each repeater goes through these tests.
