Smoothtalker, a Canadian manufacturer, produces a nice 3 watt, dual-band cell phone booster. Along with being a nice piece of equipment, it is priced very competitively. Powerful Signal took the Smoothtalker cell phone booster out for a test with the Wilson 801201 and the Cellphone-Mate (SureCall) CM2000. We went to the edge of civilization where cell phone signals drop off to nothing. We were impressed with the results. Smoothtalker held its ground with Wilson and Cellphone-Mate.

Powerful Signal’s Smoothtalker Wireless Traveler Kit is complete with 3 watt dual-band amplifier, low profile magnet mount antenna, power supply and interior broadcast antenna.

The great thing about Smoothtalker is the price. If you have been waiting to buy a cell phone booster for your vehicle because of price, then wait no more. Smoothtalker is the best price wireless cell phone booster Powerful Signal has tested. We have seen cheeper wireless units, but they did not work and pass our tests. Smoothtalker has excellent performance for the price.

We try to test everything at Powerful Signal before we sell it. We want to know how well a product works before we put our reputation behind it. We tested this little antenna (about 3.5″ tall) multiple times and found its performance to be above average. We took several of our 12″ 5dB gain magnet mount antennas and this low-profile 3.5″ antenna and put a meter to them in our office to see how they all did with regular signal. The low-profile kept up with all the 12″ antennas and even did a bit better than one of them. Another nice thing about this low profile antenna is the way it is built. It is one of the best built magnet mount antennas I have ever seen.

We then took the antenna for a ride. Now when we go for a ride, it is usually is in a very remote desert somewhere around the Utah, Arizona and Nevada borders. We drive until the signal drops. This separates the men from the boys as far as cell phone boosters and antennas go. We were surprised. Again the low profile antenna held it own ground.

In summary. If there is some reason that you can not use a 12″ magnet mount antenna on your vehicle, then do not hesitate to use the Powerful Signal Low Profile Magent Mount Antenna. In fact, I just left it on my vehicle because I liked it so much.

Powerful Signal now offers a low profile magnet mount antenna with several of their cell phone booster vehicle kits.

Building cell phone booster systems come in all different sizes and for many different purposes. Sometimes a system is needed for more than a single room or two. Most of the time when signal is required in 2,000 to 3,000 square feet, a 65dB amplifier with low loss coax is required.

There are single band and dual band 65dB cell signal boosters on the market. Sprint and T-Mobile use 1900MHz, while Verizon and AT&T are usually considered dual-band carriers that use both 800MHz and 1900MHz. I would always get a dual-band system. This allows you the freedom to switch carriers and also protects you if your carrier changes frequency in your area for any reason. Dual-band protects your investment.

When doing several thousand square feet, it is best to use a low loss coax equivalent to LMR400. Coax like RG6, RG58 and LMR240 have more than double the loss of LMR400. Loss is important, the more loss in the coax, the less broadcast you get from the amplifier. When doing a small building or home, you need all the broadcast you can get.

It is always best to do business with a company that has experiance in selecting and designing a system for your specific situation. Many companies will sell parts, but they lack the knowledge to accurately design a system that will deliver what you need or expect. Make sure the company you do business has the proper investment in inventory, knowledge to help you design the system and technical support to answer any questions during the implementation process.

This antenna upgrade is a nice improvement and should make the Wilson 801247 DT a much better product.

Carriers around the country use different frequencies. It depends upon which licenses they own or with whom they have roaming agreements. In one area they may use 800MHz and in another area they may use 1900MHz. How can you determine which frequency of cell signal booster to purchase? There is a website called www.WirelessAdvisor.com that can give you some guidelines. Remember, things change and sometimes websites like this may not be up-to-date.

The decision is easy when purchasing a vehicle cell phone booster. You should always use a dual-band system in a vehicle. When driving, you will most likely be switched between several towers as you travel through the countryside. One tower may be 800MHz the other 1900MHz. Let’s take an Sprint carrier example. Sprint is a 1900MHz carrier, but if you are a Sprint customer you might find yourself roaming on a 800MHz regional carrier tower. Bottom line, in a vehicle you should always go dual-band.

Building systems have a different set of variables when selecting a cell signal booster system. Your system is stationary, not mobile like a vehicle system. Some carriers favor certain frequencies. For example Sprint and T-Mobile primarily use 1900MHz. Alltel used to primarily be a 800MHz carrier, but then it was purchased by Verizon who uses both 800Mhz and 1900MHz.

The safe bet for any building cell signal booster system is dual-band. Today you have a Sprint cell phone using 1900MHz. Next year you switch to Verizon or someone else and you may find your system does not help you any more. A dual-band system protects your equipment investment. You might switch carriers or your carrier might switch frequencies. Either way, you might get stuck if you purchase a single-band system.
